Best Driving Holidays For This March

Country road in the U K

Driving holidays are the best way to cover a lot of ground on holiday as well as allowing you the ultimate freedom to move around at times that suit you. It can often work out cheaper than public transport and you can get off the beaten track easily, especially if you include a sat nav in your rental. To keep these costs down, it’s important to get your car excess insurance direct from a reputable provider or to see if your current insurance provider will cover you for international car hire as part of your policy.

Travelling In March

In the northern hemisphere, March is often thought of as the ideal driving month as all the snow and ice will have gone, the flowers will have started blooming but the high temperatures have yet to kick meaning you’ll avoid hot seats and an over reliance on the air conditioning.

Great Britain

Driving around the UK in March means you’ll be travelling well outside of tourist season, giving you cheaper prices and much less traffic on the smaller roads. The Lake District should be your first destination, with the cute towns of Ambleside and Keswick providing stark relief from the hair raising drives over Hard Knott Pass with its 1 in 3 incline. A drive out from Glasgow into the lochs will give you some of the most beautiful countryside views with lakes, mountains and forests stretching for miles. Finally, you could head to Devon where the high hedge rows give way to glorious views of the sea and the numerous little coastal towns.

Mainland Europe

If you’re looking for a bit more excitement, driving to the continent opens up an almost infinite range of incredible March driving holidays. For unadulterated driving pleasure, try these journeys:

  • Bergen to Oslo – March sees the last of the snow leave the tree line in Norway, and you’ll get the first glimpse of the beautiful greenery and expansive fjords that line the coastal road.
  • Milan to Naples – you’ll get the best of the famous local produce in March in Italy, and you’ll see a massive difference in culture, cities and foods as you drive from the north of the country to the south.
  • Malaga to Marseille – the Mediterranean coastal road has some of the most incredible sea side views you’ll find in Europe, and the range of cities from Barcelona to Nice will give you plenty of cause to pull over and see the sites.
